Wisdom Teeth At Harbor Dental

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth, typically between the ages of 17 and 25.  We watch the formation of these teeth in the X-rays we take of our teenage patients. If there is cause for concern, we may make recommendations to extract them before problems can even develop. Furthermore, it’s easier to remove these teeth in young people before the roots fully form and healing time is faster.

When there isn’t enough space for these teeth to properly erupt, they can become impacted, meaning they remain fully or partially trapped within the jawbone or gums. This can lead to a variety of problems, including pain, infection, damage to adjacent teeth, cysts, and even systemic issues if infections spread.

The way we remove these teeth depends on their positioning. We can remove full erupted teeth through the gum the same we would any other tooth. But, if they are impacted or incorrectly positioned, our approach to remove them will vary depending on each individual situation.

If you haven’t removed  these teeth and are experiencing pain that may be related to them, please make an appointment. We will take X-rays to assess your situation and make recommendations as to the best approach to take care of your health and your teeth.

After the extraction, it’s normal to experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising. Ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers can manage these symptoms. You’ll also be advised to stick to a soft diet for a few days and avoid strenuous activities. Proper oral hygiene is crucial during recovery, but avoid brushing directly over the extraction site for the first 24 hours.

Wisdom teeth FAQs

Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the last teeth to emerge in the mouth, typically between the ages of 17 and 25. At Harbor Dental Clinic, they monitor the development of wisdom teeth using X-rays in their teenage patients to evaluate whether removal may be recommended. It’s often easier and less complicated to remove them before the roots fully form and when healing is quicker.

When there isn’t enough space for these teeth to erupt properly, they can become impacted (trapped under gum or bone) and cause pain, infection, damage to adjacent teeth, or cysts. Harbor Dental Clinic explains that early removal can prevent these issues from developing or worsening. Removing wisdom teeth proactively often helps maintain oral health and avoids more complex problems in the future.

The process begins with selecting a composite resin color that closely matches your natural tooth color. Then, the surface of the tooth is roughened and a conditioning liquid applied to help the bonding material adhere. The tooth-colored, putty-like resin is then applied, molded, and smoothed to the desired shape. An ultraviolet light or laser is used to harden the material, after which it is trimmed, shaped, and polished to match the rest of the tooth surface.

The treatment plan depends on the positioning of the tooth; fully erupted teeth may be removed like standard extractions, whereas impacted or incorrectly positioned ones may involve additional steps based on the individual case. Harbor Dental Clinic uses imaging and tailor-made approaches to determine the best method for each patient. The process is designed to be safe, comfortable, and aligned with the patient’s anatomy and health.

Yes — Harbor Dental Clinic notes that removing wisdom teeth while a patient is young and the roots haven’t fully formed leads to faster healing and fewer complications. For older patients, the procedure can become more involved and recovery may take longer due to more developed roots and denser bone. Scheduling at the right time can make a significant difference in comfort, outcome, and recovery.

If problematic wisdom teeth are left in place, they can contribute to chronic infections, gum disease around adjacent teeth, tooth decay, crowding, cysts, and even systemic spread of infection. Harbor Dental Clinic emphasizes regular monitoring via X-rays and check-ups to catch early signs of trouble before they become serious. Staying alert to symptoms like pain, swelling, or shifting teeth and responding quickly helps protect your smile and health.
